hey everyone,
mondo just released their planet of the apes series which i was honored to be a part of.here is some close ups of my print.the whole idea of the drawing is based on Dürer's classic Cain slaying Abel woodcut.In BFTPOTA we witness for the first time that an ape broke the most important taboo "ape shall not kill ape".
the moment this happens the apes realize they have fallen from grace and their moral superiority is lost.they have fallen to the level of mankind because they have spilled blood of another ape,one of their brothers so to speak.i wanted my print to look like an old illustration from an ape "bible".the ornament consists of depictions of the lawmaker and the lawgiver,the two foundations of the ape religion if you can call it that.

i hope you guys are ready for some traditional christmas spirit!with that i mean the traditional german/austrian christmas spirit in the form of everyone's beloved christmas "demon" - the Krampus!
if you don't know who this gentleman is,well,you are in for a treat!
Krampus is basically the christmas bad guy,he is the one punishing the bratty/annoying kids...
since he is not that very well known i thought it was about time to give him some long overdue exposure and my good friends over at moon editions were up to the task to help me bring him back to life;)

hey everyone,

here`s the artwork for All Pigs Must Die`s upcoming Lp on Southern Lord which is called "god is war".personally i think it is even better than their debut Ep so i am totally stoked for this.the record itself is heavily inspired by the book "blood meridian" by Cormac McCarthy and the title itself is taken from a monologue by a character called the judge:

"Suppose two men at cards with nothing to wager save their lives.
Who has not heard such a tale?
A turn of the card.
The whole universe for such a player has labored clanking to this moment which will tell if he is to die at that man's hand or that man at his.
What more certain validation of a man's worth could there be?
This enhancement of the game to its ultimate state admits no argument concerning the notion of fate.
The selection of one man over another is a preference absolute and irrevocable and it is a dull man indeed who could reckon so profound a decision without agency or significance either one.
In such games as have for their stake the annihilation of the defeated the decisions are quite clear.
This man holding this particular arrangement of cards in his hand is thereby removed from existence.
This is the nature of war, whose stake is at once the game and the authority and the justification.
Seen so, war is the truest form of divination.
It is the testing of one's will and the will of another within that larger will which because it binds them is therefore forced to select.

Edition of 13.

This small edition is made up of boards from the early test and proofing stages of the project. Since these were used in determining the production of the main edition (i.e "working out the kinks") there are slight variations and imperfections in each board. Imperfections range from haze (tiny bubbles in the resin) and small scratches to darker wood in parts of the engraving. None of these variations are drastic enough to take away from the work itself. If you missed out on the set, this is a great opportunity to score (without spending all your lunch money!) .

The release comes wrapped in a unique hand printed wrapping paper. Shipped in a rigid cardboard mailer via USPS (Priority).

some of might have heard of the upcoming "Required Reading" gallery show at 1988 Gallery in LA.
each artist chose one or two books and created something unique for the show.
my two books were Paradise Lost by John Milton and The Call of Cthulhu by H.P.Lovecraft.
I wanted each print to have an old art nouveau aestethic because i love book covers from that period...
The guys at Moon Editions did an outstanding job printing these and i`m really excited about these....

being a huge jodorowsky fan i was stoked when i got the news that this movie is being released on blu ray by severin films.in case you haven`t seen it yet i strongly suggest you check it out.
there are few movie makers that make anything so utterly insane and creative as jodorowsky did.santa sangre has been compared to hitchcock´s psycho by critics but the visuals are completely different and unique.if freud was alive he would have loved santa sangre for its rich symbolism and psychological allegories.

anyway,here is the press release info on my new print:

"The good folks at Mondo commissioned an outstanding piece of art by Florian Bertmer, (who also created this stellar Mondo poster of The Holy Mountain), for the one night only screening of Santa Sangre at the Alamo Drafthouse in Austin TX tonight. Geez,i have been wanting to tell you about this print for quite some time but i promised Mondo to keep my mouth shut.finally it is being released - thanks to Rob for spending 70 hours doing the separations on this beast.i`m pretty sure he hates me more than hitler after this and i couldn`t blame him.
anyway,here is everybody`s favorite bounty hunter - Greedo.
i can`t tell you how many days/hours i spend on this one.it was insane....
hope you like it.lets see who can name ALL characters in the picture correctly.i think there is about 34 SW characters in here.as you can see the whole drawing was done by hand in one piece.

here`s something in did yesterday.i have never done any sculpting but i`ve always wanted to so i got me some sculpey and tried.i`m actually kinda happy with the result.if you don`t know who this is then A) shame on you and B) check this out.
Cthulhu has always been one of my favorite characters and i always wanted a cool bust for my desk but i couldn`t find anything cool (or affordable) so i went ahead and made one myself.

while i was staying in san francisco i managed to do a new print with my friends from Moon Editions.
as you might know my prints usually aren`t signed by myself due to the fact that i live in germany while my prints are made in the US.luckily i was around for the whole printing process so we decided to not only have them signed in person but give each print two hand drawn embellishments plus one hand painted higlight.

you see usually i work with HC/Metal bands or whatever you might wanna call it.

hey everyone,

for anyone who cares here`s some info on my baba yaga shirt for shirts and destroy.
i`ve always had an interest in folklore especially the really old and dark ones because they were meant to scare you or teach you a lesson.the russians in particular have some really fascinating and grim ones to tell and i`ve always wanted to do a drawing for one of these stories.
According to russian/slavic folklore there was once an old witch who flew around on a giant mortar,abducted and probably ate small children, and lived in a hut that stands on chicken legs.the fence outside is made with human bones with skulls on top.in one story the heroine Vasilisa the Beautiful took one these skulls and used it as a lantern.
The text in the banner was taken from a poem by the famous russian poet A.A.Blok titled "To the Muse" and the text goes:

такая влекущая сила,                   And such an alluring strength
Что готов я твердить за молвой,      That I'm ready to pass on the rumor
Будто ангелов ты низводила,         That you brought angels down
Соблазняя своей красотой...         With your seductive beauty...

"They've faced down humans time and time again, but Fred Phelps and his minions from the Westboro Baptist Church were not ready for the cosplay action that awaited them today at Comic-Con. After all, who can win against a counter protest that includes robots, magical anime girls, Trekkies, Jedi and...kittens?

Unbeknownst to the dastardly fanatics of the Westboro Baptist Church, the good folks of San Diego's Comic-Con were prepared for their arrival with their own special brand of superhuman counter protesting chanting "WHAT DO WE WANT" "GAY SEX" "WHEN DO WE WANT IT" "NOW!" while brandishing ironic (and some sincere) signs. Simply stated: The eclectic assembly of nerdom's finest stood and delivered.

As you can see below, the fantastic fanboys delivered the the church a humorous dose of sweet fan justice. ComicsAlliance was there to witness the spectacle in full, which you can indulge in yourself after the jump."

today was awesome because i finally got my holy mountain prints.i can't believe i did those 5 months ago.in case you're wondering why i had to wait so long - it's always like that no matter what company you work with.no hard feelings i'm just happy to finally see it in person and the guys at D & L screenprinting did a perfect job!
oh yeah that strange machine at the top?that is my broken xbox 360.actually the third one that decided to go fuck itself and die.

kevin asked if i could do a print for their short tour and this is what i came up with.seeing how their latest record was called "true nihilist" i thought it was good to have the man himself in it.i only made 40 of them and they sold out the same day i handed them over to the bands.the banners flying around have nietzsche quotes on them.he's still the man no matter what...

here's something that i have been working on for quite a while.it's done for one of my favorite hc bands from the late 90's - Jesuit.it's a shame they never got the credit they deserved so i was extremely happy to hear that brent from magic bullet decided to relese a posthum discography lp and when my friend nate asked me to do the cover i was more than happy.
if you haven't heard them (or heard of them) you have to listen to them.they were so ahead of their time if you ask me.
but enough of the praise here is the full cover,which is gonna be a gatefold lp.
some people might notice the two ladies from my "sabbath" print from 2008 gracing the cover.
so now you know how long this has been in the works.i started working on it early 2008 and had the whole thing nearly finished when my harddrive crashed along with ALL my files.time passed and we forgot about it.fortunately nate didn't and i started from scratch again and now it's finally done....
